9th Siddha Day Celebrations Begin in Chennai on Jan 3

RR Team, January 2, 2026January 2, 2026
The Ministry of Ayush is set to inaugurate the 9th Siddha Day celebrations in Chennai on January 3, marking a significant moment for India’s ancient Siddha system of medicine. The national-level event, to be held at the historic Kalaivanar Arangam, will spotlight Siddha’s growing relevance in preventive healthcare, research, and global wellness frameworks.

Observed annually on January 6 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sage Agathiyar, revered as the father of Siddha medicine, Siddha Day has emerged as a key platform to reaffirm India’s traditional medical heritage. This year’s celebrations adopt the theme “Siddha for Global Health,” underscoring efforts to position Siddha as a holistic health system with international relevance.

Vice President to Inaugurate National-Level Event

The Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, will preside over and inaugurate the 9th Siddha Day celebrations. His presence reflects the national importance accorded to traditional systems of medicine and the government’s sustained focus on their integration into mainstream healthcare.

The inaugural function will also be attended by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush and Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Senior leaders from the Tamil Nadu government, including Health Minister Shri Ma. Subramanian, will join central officials and Siddha experts on the occasion.

Strong Centre–State Collaboration

The celebrations are being jointly organised by the Ministry of Ayush along with the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) and the Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS). The Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, Government of Tamil Nadu, is also a key partner, highlighting strong Centre–State coordination in promoting Siddha medicine.

Senior officials including Padma Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Tamil Nadu, and Smt. M. Vijayalakshmi, Director of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, are expected to address the gathering.

Honouring Excellence in Siddha Medicine

A key highlight of the 9th Siddha Day celebrations will be the felicitation of five eminent personalities for their exceptional contributions to the Siddha system of medicine. These awards aim to recognise lifelong dedication in clinical practice, education, research, and the preservation of traditional Siddha knowledge.

The honours reflect the Ministry of Ayush’s emphasis on acknowledging practitioners and scholars who have strengthened Siddha’s credibility and expanded its reach across generations.

Wide Participation from Academia and Research

The event is expected to witness participation from Siddha practitioners, scientists, academicians, scholars, and students from across Tamil Nadu and other states. Researchers from NIS and CCRS, members of statutory Siddha bodies, and officials from both central and state governments will also be present.

Students from government Siddha medical colleges in Chennai and Palayamkottai, as well as self-financing Siddha colleges from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are expected to attend in large numbers, reflecting growing academic interest in the discipline.

Siddha for Global Health Vision

The theme “Siddha for Global Health” captures the government’s broader vision of promoting traditional Indian medicine systems on international platforms. Siddha medicine, with its strong foundation in preventive care, lifestyle management, and natural therapeutics, is increasingly being seen as relevant to global health challenges.

The Ministry of Ayush continues to focus on research collaboration, evidence-based validation, and academic expansion to enhance Siddha’s acceptance worldwide. The celebrations will showcase Siddha’s role in public health, innovation, and integrative medicine.
