Sarbananda Sonowal Highlights Press Freedom, Welfare Governance

RR Team, January 3, 2026January 3, 2026
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday underlined the critical role of the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, while also highlighting the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people-centric governance model in ensuring last-mile delivery of welfare schemes. Addressing journalists and community members in Assam, Sonowal called for responsible, ethical journalism and inclusive development rooted in public welfare.

Media as the Fourth Pillar of Democracy

Speaking at the 17th Central Mid-Term Conference of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU) in Tinsukia, Sonowal described journalists as the vigilant sentinels of society and the authentic voice of the people. He said the press carries an immense responsibility in safeguarding freedom of expression and reinforcing democratic values, especially in a rapidly evolving information landscape.

“The role of the media as society’s conscious watchdog is immeasurable. Journalists have consistently protected freedom of speech and ensured accountability,” Sonowal remarked, acknowledging the media’s contribution to democracy.

Call for Ethical and Responsible Journalism

Emphasising the need for credibility and integrity, Sonowal urged media professionals to prioritise truth over sensationalism. He cautioned against the spread of misinformation and stressed that ethical journalism is essential to maintain public trust.

According to the Union Minister, journalism should act as a bridge between the government and citizens, amplifying public concerns while promoting harmony and constructive dialogue. He noted that coordination and consensus-building, rather than conflict-driven narratives, can strengthen society.

Adapting to New Challenges in Media

Sonowal observed that journalists today face evolving challenges due to technological changes and the fast pace of information dissemination. He called for continuous capacity building, professional integrity, and adaptation to new tools while remaining firmly rooted in public interest journalism.

MLAs Sanjay Kishan and Bolin Chetia, along with senior journalists and other dignitaries, attended the APCU conference, reflecting broad support for strengthening ethical media practices.

People-Centric Welfare Delivery Under PM Modi

Earlier in the day, in the Makum Legislative Assembly Constituency, Sonowal participated in programmes marking the foundation stone laying and inauguration of multiple welfare schemes. He interacted directly with beneficiaries of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship initiatives, underscoring the government’s focus on grassroots empowerment

“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, development has reached the last mile. Welfare schemes are directly empowering beneficiaries and strengthening grassroots entrepreneurship,” Sonowal said, describing the governance model as inclusive and people-centric.

Support for Local Entrepreneurship

During his visit, the Union Minister also engaged with local entrepreneurs,  acknowledging their contribution to the regional economy. He noted that empowering small businesses and encouraging entrepreneurship are key pillars of sustainable economic growth in Assam.

Sonowal emphasised that welfare delivery and economic development must go hand in hand to create long-term social upliftment.

Senior Citizens’ Bhawan Inaugurated at Panitola

At Panitola, Sonowal inaugurated a newly constructed Senior Citizens’ Office Bhawan built under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). Developed at a cost of ₹15 lakh during the 2024–25 financial year, the facility aims to strengthen institutional support for senior citizens at the grassroots level.

He said such infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring dignity, accessibility, and community engagement for the elderly.

Broad Participation from Local Leadership

The programme was attended by Makum Municipal Board Chairperson Archana Saikia, Makum College Vice Principal Papori Baruah, Dibrugarh Development Authority Chairman Ashim Hazarika, Assam State Housing Board Chairman Pulak Gohain, BJP Tinsukia district president Kushakanta Bora, and several other local leaders.

Sonowal’s engagements across Tinsukia and Panitola highlighted a governance approach that integrates democratic values, media freedom, and inclusive welfare.
