India Gears Up to Host 2036 Olympics: PM Modi

RR Team, January 4, 2026January 4, 2026
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is making comprehensive preparations to host the 2036 Olympic Games, underlining the country’s growing confidence and capability in staging world-class sporting events.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship via video conference, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s expanding sports ecosystem and its successful track record in organising major international competitions over the past decade.

“In the last ten years, India has hosted more than 20 major international sporting events across various cities,” Modi said, citing examples such as the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and prominent international chess tournaments.

2030 Commonwealth Games and Olympic Ambitions

Reiterating the government’s long-term vision for sports, the Prime Minister said the 2030 Commonwealth Games will be hosted in India, serving as a major stepping stone toward the country’s Olympic aspirations.

“The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in India. The nation is preparing with full strength to host the 2036 Olympic Games,” Modi stated, signalling India’s intent to play a larger role in global sports governance and event hosting.

India has formally expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, with multiple cities expected to be evaluated for infrastructure readiness, connectivity, sustainability, and legacy planning.

Focus on Sports Infrastructure and Grassroots Talent

The Prime Minister emphasised that India’s preparations go beyond hosting mega events and include strengthening grassroots sports, modernising infrastructure, and supporting athletes at every level.

The 72nd National Volleyball Championship, being held from January 4 to 11, features over 1,000 players representing 58 teams from across the country. Officials said the tournament is expected to showcase high standards of competition, sportsmanship, and emerging talent.

Hosting the championship in Varanasi reflects the government’s effort to take major sporting events beyond metropolitan centres, boosting regional sports culture and infrastructure.

Varanasi Emerging as a Sports and Cultural Hub

An official statement noted that organising the national volleyball tournament in Varanasi underlines the city’s growing role as a hub for major national events. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to combine cultural heritage with modern development.

In recent years, Varanasi has witnessed significant investments in sports facilities, urban infrastructure, and connectivity, enhancing its capacity to host large-scale events.

These developments are part of a nationwide push to decentralise sports infrastructure and ensure that talent from smaller cities and towns receives adequate exposure and opportunities.

India’s Global Sporting Profile on the Rise

Experts believe India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics reflects a broader transformation in the country’s sports landscape. Improved athlete performance, increased funding, and private sector participation have strengthened India’s international standing.

The government’s flagship programmes, including Khelo India and Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), have played a key role in identifying and nurturing young talent.

As preparations continue, the success of upcoming events like the Commonwealth Games will be closely watched as indicators of India’s readiness to host the Olympics.

Road Ahead

While hosting the Olympics remains a long-term goal, the Prime Minister’s statement signals strong political will and administrative focus. Stakeholders across sports federations, state governments, and private partners are expected to play a critical role.

If successful, hosting the 2036 Olympics could mark a defining moment in India’s sporting history, boosting tourism, infrastructure, and national pride while inspiring a new generation of athletes.
