Legacy of a Soldier and Statesman
Born in 1926, Lt Gen Sinha played pivotal roles during India’s critical moments. Raksha Mantri recalled his efforts on the Burma front in the Second World War and his coordination of the first Indian Army airlift to Srinagar in 1947 amid advancing Pakistan-backed forces. Admired for his professionalism and intellect, Lt Gen Sinha excelled at both the Indian and British Staff Colleges.
During his military tenure, he modernized the Indian Army’s thinking and strengthened its institutional framework through key roles including Director of Military Intelligence, Adjutant General, and various command appointments. Raksha Mantri emphasized that his dedication continued post-retirement, as Ambassador to Nepal, and as Governor ensuring security and development in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.
Chief of Defence Staff on Lt Gen Sinha’s Ideals
Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan described Lt Gen Sinha as a Soldier-Statesman, Scholar Warrior, and man of exemplary character. He urged Armed Forces personnel to emulate Lt Gen Sinha’s balance of professional rigor, moral clarity, and intellectual curiosity. Gen Chauhan highlighted the importance of cultivating soldier-scholars capable of navigating modern warfare domains including cyber, space, and information.
He underscored that courage extends beyond the battlefield, encompassing ethical decision-making, integrity, and quiet contributions to nation-building during peace. Emphasizing education, reflection, and empathy, the CDS advised military leaders to inspire both junior officers and veterans to uphold the Constitution while protecting India’s sovereignty and future.
Honoring a National Icon
The centenary lecture was attended by three former Chiefs of Army Staff – Gen NC Vij, Gen Deepak Kapoor, and Gen Dalbir Singh, along with Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen PP Singh. Around 300 serving and retired personnel, as well as Lt Gen Sinha’s family members, participated in the commemoration, reflecting the enduring respect for his contributions to India’s security and diplomacy.
Raksha Mantri urged citizens to learn from Lt Gen Sinha’s ideals as India aspires to become a secure, self-reliant, and prosperous nation, highlighting the timeless relevance of his courage, dedication, and intellect.
