India Achieves Record 266 GW Clean Energy Capacity in 2025

RR Team, January 11, 2026January 11, 2026
India achieved a record-breaking milestone in its clean energy journey in 2025, with the country’s non-fossil fuel installed capacity reaching 266.78 GW. This represents a remarkable 22.6% growth over 2024 levels, according to Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi. During the year, India added 49.12 GW of renewable energy capacity, driven primarily by rapid expansion in solar and wind energy.

Solar and Wind Lead the Renewable Surge

Solar energy was the main driver of India’s renewable energy growth in 2025. Installed solar capacity surged from 97.86 GW in 2024 to 135.81 GW, marking a robust 38.8% increase. Wind energy also contributed significantly, rising from 48.16 GW to 54.51 GW, a 13.2% growth. Together, these two sources continue to be the backbone of India’s renewable energy expansion, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable power generation.

Bioenergy and Small Hydro Strengthen Diversification

Beyond solar and wind, other renewable energy segments also expanded steadily. Bioenergy capacity reached 11.61 GW, including 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy off-grid projects, highlighting India’s progress in clean fuel generation and effective waste management. Small hydro projects contributed 5.16 GW, supporting decentralized energy development and regional renewable initiatives. Large hydro power capacity stood at 50.91 GW, including 7,175.6 MW of pumped storage, bolstering grid stability and renewable integration.

Policy and Vision Propel Green Growth

Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized that India’s record clean energy growth reflects strong policy direction, strategic vision, and sustained implementation under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He highlighted that this progress strengthens India’s energy security, supports climate responsibility, and advances a self-reliant green economy. The government remains on track to achieve the national target of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will continue collaborating with state governments and stakeholders to further accelerate renewable energy deployment across the country, ensuring India stays on course to become a global leader in clean energy.
