In a significant victory against drug trafficking organizations operating in the Gulf of Mannar, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) collaborated to seize a substantial quantity of illegal drugs. This successful operation, which involved the apprehension of four individuals and the confiscation of 99 kilograms of hashish valued at an estimated ₹108 crore, not only prevented a significant influx of narcotics into the region but also served as a powerful deterrent to potential smugglers.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials meticulously planned and coordinated a joint operation with the ICG. Throughout the night of March 4th, 2024, ICG personnel maintained relentless surveillance over the Gulf of Mannar using a patrol vessel. Their unwavering vigilance proved crucial when they identified a suspicious country boat deviating from its usual course and exhibiting unusual behaviour. Promptly initiating a pursuit, the ICG team successfully intercepted the vessel after a brief chase.
A thorough search conducted by the joint team revealed five cleverly concealed sacks onboard the vessel. Upon closer inspection, the contents of the sacks turned out to be a brown, sticky substance. Field testing confirmed the officers’ suspicions – the substance was hashish, a narcotic illegal under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The estimated international market value of the seized hashish stands at a staggering ₹108 crore, highlighting the significant financial implications of disrupting this particular smuggling attempt.
Four individuals found on board the vessel were apprehended for further investigation. During questioning, they reportedly admitted to receiving the hashish from a contact in the Pamban coastal area. Their intended course of action involved handing over the narcotics to unidentified individuals from Sri Lanka at a pre-determined location in the deep sea.
This successful operation underscores the critical role played by the Indian Coast Guard and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in safeguarding India’s maritime borders and combating transnational drug trafficking. Their dedication, swift action, and seamless collaboration have not only prevented a significant quantity of illegal drugs from entering the market but also sent a clear message to those involved in such illicit activities. The ongoing cooperation between these agencies is crucial in disrupting the operations of drug trafficking networks, protecting India’s national security, and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
