President Murmu Addresses GNDU Convocation, Stresses Nation-Building

RR Team, January 15, 2026January 16, 2026
President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu on Thursday underscored that education should not be viewed merely as a means of earning a livelihood but as a powerful instrument to serve society and strengthen the nation. Addressing the convocation ceremony of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, she urged young graduates to carry forward values of integrity, responsibility, and social commitment as they step into professional life.
The convocation ceremony, held in Punjab’s historic city of Amritsar, witnessed the President interacting with students, faculty members, and dignitaries. Her address focused on the role of higher education in shaping not just skilled professionals, but conscientious citizens capable of contributing to India’s long-term development goals.

Values That Define True Success

President Murmu observed that after completing formal education, students pursue diverse paths, ranging from government service and private sector jobs to research, entrepreneurship, and teaching. While each profession demands specific skills, she highlighted certain universal qualities essential for success in every field.

These include a lifelong desire to learn, unwavering adherence to moral values, integrity, and honesty even in difficult circumstances. She also emphasised courage to accept change, the ability to learn from failures, teamwork, disciplined use of time and resources, and a commitment to use knowledge for the greater good rather than personal gain.

According to the President, these qualities not only help individuals become capable professionals but also responsible citizens who can positively influence society.

Education as a Social Responsibility

Highlighting the broader purpose of learning, the President reminded students that society plays a crucial role in enabling their education. She said graduates carry a moral responsibility to give back by supporting those who have been left behind in the journey of development.

She suggested that contributing to social upliftment, whether through community service, innovation, or ethical leadership, can be a meaningful way of repaying this collective debt to society.

Opportunities in Technology and Entrepreneurship

President Murmu noted that India has made significant progress in technology and entrepreneurship over the past decade. From agriculture and artificial intelligence to defence and space, young Indians today have access to a wide spectrum of opportunities.

She stressed that higher education institutions have a vital role in accelerating this momentum by promoting research, strengthening industry-academia collaboration, and encouraging innovations that address real societal needs.

Addressing Social Challenges in Punjab

The President expressed concern over the growing problem of drug abuse in Punjab, describing it as a serious challenge that disproportionately affects the youth. She warned that substance abuse damages not only individual health but also the social, economic, and moral fabric of society.

Calling for a sustained and collective response, she said universities like Guru Nanak Dev University must actively guide young people towards constructive paths and positive life choices.

Youth at the Heart of Viksit Bharat

President Murmu said the next two decades would be decisive in achieving the vision of “Viksit Bharat.” She stressed that the future of the country depends on young citizens who possess scientific temper, act responsibly, and serve selflessly.

She urged higher education institutions to inculcate these values and encouraged students to ensure that whichever profession they choose, their work should strengthen national unity and uphold human values.

Legacy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The President recalled that Guru Nanak Dev University was established during the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and continues to be guided by his teachings. She described his ideals as a shared heritage that offers solutions to many of society’s challenges.

Highlighting Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s emphasis on gender equality, she appreciated the university’s efforts towards women’s empowerment. She noted with satisfaction the significant presence of female students among degree and medal recipients at the convocation.

She concluded by stating that empowering women with confidence and equal opportunities is essential for the progress of both society and the nation.
