Modi Lauds BJP’s BMC Win, Slams Congress in Assam

RR Team, January 18, 2026January 18, 2026
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the “first choice of the people,” citing the party’s historic victory in the Mumbai Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections and recent electoral gains across multiple states. Addressing public gatherings during his two-day visit to Assam, the Prime Minister said the results reflected growing public trust in BJP’s governance and development model.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came days after the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance wrested control of the BMC, Asia’s richest civic body, marking the party’s first-ever win in Mumbai’s municipal elections. The victory is being seen as a significant political milestone ahead of key state and national contests.

BJP’s Electoral Surge Across States

Highlighting the party’s recent performance, PM Modi said the BJP has witnessed a continuous rise over the past one-and-a-half years despite facing a temporary setback during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He pointed to strong mandates in Bihar, Maharashtra’s municipal corporations, and local body polls in Kerala as evidence of expanding support.

“From Bihar to Maharashtra and Kerala, people have expressed faith in the BJP for stability, development, and clean governance,” the Prime Minister said, noting that Thiruvananthapuram elected its first-ever BJP mayor during the recent municipal elections.

In Mumbai, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 89 seats in the 227-member civic body, while ally Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) secured 29 seats. Together, the Mahayuti crossed the majority mark, though cooperation between allies will remain crucial for key policy decisions. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena jointly secured 71 seats, retaining influence in several Marathi-dominated wards but losing overall control of the civic body.

Sharp Attack on Congress in Assam

While addressing a rally in Assam’s Kaliabor, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of encouraging illegal infiltration during its decades-long rule in the state. He alleged that land was “handed over to infiltrators for vote-bank politics,” leading to encroachments on forests, wildlife corridors, and traditional institutions.

“The BJP government is protecting Assam’s identity, culture, and land by taking firm action against illegal encroachments,” Modi said, adding that voters now trust the BJP to safeguard national and regional interests.

According to the Prime Minister, the BJP’s policies in Assam focus on balanced development, security, and environmental protection, distinguishing it from previous administrations.

Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Launched

During his visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at protecting wildlife while improving road connectivity. The corridor is part of the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway-715.

The project includes approximately 34.45 km of elevated, wildlife-friendly corridors and bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat. Officials said it would reduce road accidents, ensure safe animal movement across Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, boost eco-tourism, and generate local employment.

Amrit Bharat Express Trains Flagged Off

The Prime Minister also virtually flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Dibrugarh with Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) and Kamakhya with Rohtak. The trains are part of the Centre’s push to provide affordable, long-distance rail travel with modern amenities.

According to the government, the Amrit Bharat initiative aims to enhance connectivity between the Northeast and other parts of the country while supporting economic integration.

Political Implications Ahead

Political observers view the BJP’s Mumbai BMC victory as a symbolic breakthrough in a city long dominated by regional parties. The result strengthens the BJP’s organisational base in Maharashtra and reinforces its narrative of being the preferred choice for urban governance.

As the Prime Minister continues his outreach across states, the BJP is expected to leverage recent electoral successes and infrastructure announcements to consolidate support ahead of upcoming elections.
