PM Modi Unveils ₹830-Crore Projects, Flags Amrit Bharat Trains

RR Team, January 18, 2026January 18, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled a series of major infrastructure and connectivity initiatives in West Bengal, launching development projects worth over ₹830 crore and flagging off three Amrit Bharat Express trains from Kolkata. The initiatives are aimed at strengthening transport networks, improving logistics efficiency, and accelerating economic growth in eastern India.

The projects were inaugurated at a public function held in Singur, located in Hooghly district, where the Prime Minister emphasised the Centre’s commitment to ensuring balanced regional development. According to him, sustained investment in rail, port, and transport infrastructure will help unlock West Bengal’s economic potential and create new employment opportunities.

New Rail Connectivity for Rural and Urban Bengal

As part of the programme, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Jayrambati–Barogopinathpur–Maynapur rail line, a long-awaited project expected to improve connectivity in rural pockets of West Bengal. A new passenger train service between Maynapur and Jayrambati was also flagged off, enhancing access to education, healthcare, and markets for residents of the region.

Railway officials noted that the newly inaugurated line will significantly reduce travel time and provide a reliable transport option for thousands of daily commuters. The project is also expected to support tourism, particularly to culturally and spiritually significant locations in the region.

Three Amrit Bharat Express Trains Flagged Off

A major highlight of the event was the flagging off of three Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Kolkata to key cities across the country. The new services will operate on the Howrah–Anand Vihar Terminal, Sealdah–Banaras, and Santragachi–Tambaram routes, linking eastern India with northern and southern regions.

The Amrit Bharat Express trains are designed to offer affordable, non-AC long-distance travel with improved passenger amenities. The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader plan to modernise train services while keeping fares accessible for the common citizen.

Balagarh Extended Port Gate Project Launched

In addition to rail projects, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Extended Port Gate System at Balagarh in Hooghly district. The project includes the development of an Inland Water Transport (IWT) terminal and a road overbridge, aimed at strengthening multimodal logistics infrastructure in the state.

Spread across nearly 900 acres, the Balagarh facility is being developed as a modern cargo handling terminal with an estimated capacity of around 2.7 million tonnes per annum. Once operational, the terminal is expected to divert cargo movement away from congested urban corridors, improving efficiency and reducing logistics costs.

Boost to Eastern India’s Economic Growth

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said the Centre’s development initiatives would act as a catalyst for West Bengal’s progress. He reiterated that infrastructure-led growth is central to the vision of a developed eastern India, with ports, railways, and waterways playing a critical role.

Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the Balagarh project, combined with enhanced rail connectivity, will strengthen trade flows and support industrial growth in the region.

With the launch of these projects, West Bengal is set to gain improved connectivity, streamlined logistics, and new avenues for economic expansion, reinforcing its strategic importance in India’s eastern growth corridor.
