Piyush Goyal to Outline Geoscience Goals at CGPB 65

RR Team, January 21, 2026
New Delhi, January 21: The Geological Survey of India (GSI), under the Ministry of Mines, will host the 65th Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting at the A. P. Shinde Symposium Hall, ICAR, Pusa, New Delhi. Shri Piyush Goyal, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, will chair the meeting, which aims to align geoscientific initiatives with national priorities and sustainable development goals.
The CGPB serves as a crucial platform where the Annual Field Season Programme (FSP) of GSI is discussed, ensuring coordinated efforts among State Governments, Central and State mineral exploration agencies, PSUs, private sector companies, and other stakeholders. The meeting helps avoid duplication, prioritizes critical projects, and finalizes the Annual Programme for the forthcoming financial year based on national and strategic requirements.

Focus on Critical Minerals and Modern Exploration

The deliberations will emphasize exploration of strategic minerals such as lithium, rare earth elements, graphite, vanadium, scandium, cesium, and platinum group elements, supporting India’s energy transition and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals. Participants will also discuss the adoption of advanced exploration tools, including AI and ML-based data integration, hyperspectral remote sensing, deep drilling techniques, and comprehensive mineral system studies.

Collaborative models and pre-competitive data sharing will be promoted to optimize the use of national resources, reduce duplication, and accelerate the transition from exploration to auction-ready mineral blocks. The meeting will also address landslide hazard zonation and slope stability studies, with particular focus on the Himalayas and Northeastern states, to enhance disaster risk reduction.

Unveiling GSI’s Annual Programme for FS 2026-27

During the meeting, GSI will present its Annual Programme for FS 2026-27, featuring 1,068 peer-reviewed projects spanning mineral exploration, carbon sequestration studies, offshore exploration, and public-good geoscience initiatives. The programme emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and expanded efforts on critical minerals, aligning scientific work with national development and global sustainability goals.

Key publications of the Geological Survey of India will be released, and an exhibition showcasing strategic and critical mineral exploration activities will be held. The meeting underscores India’s commitment to advancing innovation, resource security, and geoscientific excellence.

Stakeholders and Leadership Participation

Senior officials attending include Shri Asit Saha, Director General, GSI, Shri Sanjay Lohiya, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mines, representatives from State geological departments, PSUs, and private exploration companies. The meeting provides a collaborative platform to integrate geoscientific priorities with policy and industry objectives, while fostering sustainable mineral exploration and research.
