1,800 Flights Cancelled as Massive Winter Storm Hits the US

RR Team, January 24, 2026January 24, 2026
The United States is grappling with a massive winter storm that has already cancelled more than 1,800 flights and placed over 150 million people under weather alerts. The powerful system, bringing heavy snowfall, ice and freezing rain, has prompted at least 15 states to declare states of emergency as authorities brace for widespread disruption.
The storm began intensifying early Friday, with heavy snow reported across parts of Northwest Texas and Oklahoma City. Meteorologists warned that the extreme weather event could last several days, spreading eastward into densely populated regions.

Heavy Snowfall and Ice Stretch Across the Country

The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast significant snowfall from Oklahoma to the northeastern United States, with some regions expected to receive more than a foot of snow by Monday. In addition to snow, large areas are likely to experience freezing rain and sleet.

According to the NWS, the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley and parts of the Southeast face the risk of severe ice accumulation. Such conditions could result in long-lasting power outages, extensive tree damage and dangerous travel conditions.

States of Emergency Declared

At least 15 US states, including New York, Maryland, Kentucky and Georgia, have declared states of emergency in anticipation of the storm’s impact. Governors have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power disruptions.

Emergency services across several states have been placed on high alert, with snowplows, utility crews and rescue teams deployed in advance to respond to emergencies as conditions worsen.

Flights Cancelled, Travel Comes to a Halt

Air travel has been severely disrupted as the storm sweeps across major transportation hubs. According to flight tracking service FlightAware, more than 1,800 flights scheduled for the weekend have already been cancelled, with many more delays expected.

Major airlines, including Delta Air Lines, have issued travel advisories, urging passengers to reschedule their journeys. Airlines have also introduced flexible travel waivers to help customers adjust plans without penalty.

FAA Warns of Airport Closures

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned that several airports may be forced to temporarily shut down due to severe weather conditions. The agency said air travel from Texas through the Northeast could be significantly affected.

“The FAA is working closely with airlines to reposition aircraft ahead of anticipated airport closures,” officials said, adding that safety remains the top priority amid rapidly deteriorating weather conditions.

Storm to Shift Toward Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

Weather experts said the storm is expected to move toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions over the coming days, impacting some of the most densely populated areas in the country. The system is also bringing an intense cold wave, with temperatures plunging well below seasonal averages.

According to media reports, the storm’s snow and ice could stretch over 2,000 miles from Texas to New England, making it one of the most extensive winter systems of the season.

Authorities Urge Caution

Authorities have advised residents to stock up on essentials, charge electronic devices and remain indoors where possible. Motorists have been warned against driving on icy roads, as emergency responders may find it difficult to reach stranded vehicles.
