PM Modi Pays Tribute to Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai

RR Team, January 28, 2026January 28, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai on his birth anniversary, remembering the legendary freedom fighter as one of the most fearless voices of India’s struggle against British colonial rule. The Prime Minister said Lala Lajpat Rai devoted his entire life to freeing the nation from the chains of slavery, and his sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Modi described Lala Lajpat Rai as an immortal son of Mother India whose courage, patriotism and commitment to national dignity remain deeply etched in the country’s collective memory.

Remembering a Fearless Nationalist

Paying homage, the Prime Minister said Lala Lajpat Rai offered everything he had for the cause of India’s independence. He noted that Rai’s life of sacrifice stands as a guiding force for every generation, particularly at a time when the nation continues to draw strength from its freedom struggle.

The tribute comes as the country commemorates the birth anniversary of one of the most influential leaders of the Indian nationalist movement, popularly known as “Punjab Kesari” for his unmatched courage and resolve.

Role in India’s Freedom Movement

Lala Lajpat Rai was among the foremost leaders who shaped India’s resistance to British rule in the early 20th century. A prominent member of the Lal–Bal–Pal triumvirate, along with Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, he advocated assertive nationalism and self-reliance at a time when political consciousness was rapidly evolving.

He played a significant role in mobilising public opinion against colonial policies and remained vocal on issues of civil liberties, education and national pride. His leadership helped inspire mass participation in the freedom movement across northern India.

Symbol of Sacrifice and Courage

Lala Lajpat Rai’s name became synonymous with resistance after he sustained grievous injuries during a protest against the Simon Commission in 1928. His unwavering stand against injustice and his willingness to face repression embodied the spirit of India’s freedom struggle.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute highlighted this legacy of sacrifice, underlining how Rai’s courage in the face of adversity strengthened the nation’s resolve to achieve independence.

Enduring Legacy Beyond Politics

Beyond politics, Lala Lajpat Rai was a strong advocate of social reform, education and national awakening. He believed that freedom was incomplete without social responsibility and self-confidence among citizens.

His contributions to educational institutions and nationalist thought continue to influence India’s intellectual and cultural landscape. The Prime Minister’s message reflected this broader legacy, portraying Rai not just as a freedom fighter, but as a nation-builder.

PM’s Message to the Nation

In his post, Prime Minister Modi said Lala Lajpat Rai’s life will remain a source of inspiration for every generation of Indians. The message resonated strongly with themes of patriotism, sacrifice and duty towards the nation.

Such tributes, observers say, serve as reminders of the values that shaped India’s independence and encourage citizens to uphold those ideals in contemporary times.

The birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai is observed across the country through tributes, educational programmes and remembrance events, particularly in Punjab and northern India. Leaders from across political and social spheres mark the occasion by recalling his immense contribution to the freedom movement.
