Beating Retreat Reflects India’s Military Heritage: PM Modi

RR Team, January 29, 2026January 29, 2026
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the Beating Retreat ceremony stands as a powerful symbol of India’s rich military heritage and marks the formal conclusion of the Republic Day celebrations. Highlighting the significance of the event, the Prime Minister expressed deep pride in the country’s armed forces for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation.

The Prime Minister shared his thoughts ahead of the Beating Retreat ceremony, which traditionally takes place at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi, drawing citizens’ attention to the values of discipline, honour and service embodied by the armed forces.

Symbolic Conclusion of Republic Day Celebrations

The Beating Retreat ceremony is an integral part of India’s Republic Day traditions, signalling the end of the national celebrations that begin with the grand parade on January 26. The ceremony features performances by military bands of the Army, Navy and Air Force, set against the backdrop of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Over the years, the event has evolved into a solemn yet visually striking display of India’s military traditions, blending ceremonial drill with musical excellence.

Showcasing India’s Military Heritage

Prime Minister Modi noted that the ceremony showcases the strength and depth of India’s military heritage. From time-honoured tunes to contemporary compositions, the performances reflect the armed forces’ discipline, coordination and pride in service.

The Prime Minister emphasised that such traditions serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of soldiers who have defended the country with courage and commitment.

Pride in the Armed Forces

Expressing gratitude, the Prime Minister said the nation is extremely proud of its armed forces, who remain steadfast in their duty to protect India’s sovereignty and security. He highlighted the professionalism and dedication displayed by soldiers, sailors and air warriors across diverse and challenging terrains.

The message resonated with citizens, reinforcing the bond between the armed forces and the people they serve.

Sanskrit Subhashitam on Wisdom and Honour

Alongside his remarks on the Beating Retreat ceremony, Prime Minister Modi shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam that emphasises wisdom, restraint and honour in victory. The verse underscores the idea that true strength lies in guided action and ethical conduct, even in moments of triumph.

The Subhashitam conveys a message to warriors to temper courage with wisdom, lead by example and uphold values while marching towards victory.

Message Shared in Hindi and Sanskrit

The Prime Minister posted his message on social media platform X in Hindi, accompanied by the Sanskrit verse. This reflected not only the ceremonial importance of the event but also India’s civilisational heritage and linguistic diversity.

By invoking classical Sanskrit wisdom, the Prime Minister linked ancient values with modern national traditions, highlighting continuity in India’s cultural ethos.

Cultural and National Significance

The Beating Retreat ceremony is widely regarded as more than a military event. It represents discipline, unity and the seamless integration of tradition with modern statehood. Citizens from across the country and viewers worldwide witness the ceremony as a symbol of national pride.

The event also reinforces respect for the armed forces and the values they stand for, including honour, sacrifice and service.

Official Confirmation by PIB

The Prime Minister’s remarks were shared through an official release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), confirming his message on the significance of the Beating Retreat ceremony and the Sanskrit Subhashitam.

A Ceremony of Honour and Reflection

As the final notes of the military bands echo through Vijay Chowk, the Beating Retreat ceremony offers a moment of reflection on the nation’s journey, its defenders and the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.

The Prime Minister’s message, blendin leg contemporary appreciation with timeless wisdom, underscored the enduring values that guide India’s march towards a confident and secure future.
