India Will Continue to Support Palestine, PM Modi Tells Arab Leaders

RR Team, February 1, 2026February 1, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reaffirmed India’s long-standing and principled support for the people of Palestine, underscoring New Delhi’s commitment to peace, stability, and a negotiated two-state solution in West Asia. The assurance came during his meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian in New Delhi.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the second India–Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, bringing together senior diplomats from across the Arab world to discuss regional developments and future cooperation with India.

India Reiterates Support for Palestine

According to an official Indian readout, Prime Minister Modi welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts, including proposals aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. He also highlighted the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing the need for sustained international engagement to alleviate civilian suffering.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Aghabekian conveyed her government’s appreciation for India’s consistent and principled backing of Palestinian rights under international law. She acknowledged India’s role as a reliable development partner and its humanitarian contributions over the years.

Arab World a Key Partner for India

In a message shared later on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi described the Arab world as part of India’s “extended neighbourhood,” bound by deep civilisational ties and enduring people-to-people connections.

He expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation in areas such as technology, energy, trade, and innovation would unlock new opportunities and elevate India–Arab relations to new heights.

India’s Development Assistance to Palestine

India has remained a significant development partner for Palestine, extending support both bilaterally and through United Nations agencies. Official sources said India has provided assistance worth nearly USD 170 million so far.

Projects valued at approximately USD 40 million are currently under implementation, covering sectors such as education, healthcare, and capacity building.

Jaishankar Raises Terrorism Concerns

During the foreign ministers’ meeting, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly raised the issue of cross-border terrorism. He said terrorism violates the basic principles of international relations and diplomacy.

Jaishankar asserted that societies targeted by terrorism have the right to defend themselves and called for zero tolerance as a universal and uncompromising norm.

Gaza Peace Plan a Shared Priority

The external affairs minister noted that the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape in West Asia has direct implications for India’s engagement with the Arab world. He said advancing a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict was a widely shared priority among participating nations.

Several countries, he added, have already issued policy declarations individually or collectively in support of peace efforts.

Looking Ahead

Prime Minister Modi outlined his broader vision for India–Arab cooperation in the coming years, reaffirming India’s commitment to deeper engagement in trade, investment, energy, healthcare, and technology for mutual benefit.

The meeting underscored India’s balanced and principled approach in West Asia supporting peace, opposing terrorism, and maintaining strong ties across the region.
