PM Modi Greets Nation on Sacred Thai Poosam Festival

RR Team, February 1, 2026February 1, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended warm greetings to people across India and devotees worldwide on the sacred occasion of Thai Poosam, one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan. The Prime Minister prayed for the well-being of all and expressed hope that the divine blessings of Lord Murugan would bring good health, success, and prosperity to every household.

The message was shared through an official statement and social media posts, reflecting the government’s emphasis on acknowledging India’s rich spiritual and cultural traditions. Thai Poosam is observed with deep devotion, particularly in Tamil Nadu and among Tamil communities across the globe.

PM’s Message of Faith and Well-being

In his message, Prime Minister Modi invoked the traditional chant “Vetrivel Muruganuku Arogara,” a devotional expression that resonates strongly with devotees of Lord Murugan. He described Thai Poosam as a sacred occasion that inspires faith, discipline, and spiritual strength.

The Prime Minister said that the blessings of Lord Murugan serve as a guiding force in people’s lives and encourage individuals to pursue righteousness, courage, and selfless service. His message highlighted the universal appeal of the festival’s values beyond regional or linguistic boundaries.

Greetings Shared in Multiple Languages

Demonstrating India’s linguistic and cultural diversity, Prime Minister Modi shared his greetings in English as well as Tamil. In his Tamil message, he wished that the grace of Lord Murugan would always remain with the people and that everyone would be blessed with good health, victory, and prosperity.

The multilingual outreach was widely appreciated by devotees, particularly in southern India and among the Tamil diaspora. Observers noted that such gestures help strengthen emotional and cultural bonds between the nation’s leadership and its people.

Significance of Thai Poosam

Thai Poosam is celebrated during the Tamil month of Thai, usually falling in January or February, when the Poosam star is at its peak. The festival commemorates the divine moment when Goddess Parvati bestowed the Vel, or sacred spear, upon Lord Murugan to vanquish evil forces.

Devotees observe the day through prayers, fasting, temple visits, and processions. In many places, elaborate rituals and acts of devotion symbolise gratitude, penance, and unwavering faith.

Observances Across India and Abroad

Thai Poosam is observed with particular fervour at prominent Lord Murugan temples such as Palani, Tiruchendur, and Thirupparankundram in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of devotees undertake pilgrimages and participate in special poojas and abhishekams.

Beyond India, the festival is also celebrated with devotion in countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Mauritius, where large Tamil communities reside. The day serves as a unifying cultural and spiritual event for the global Tamil diaspora.

Cultural and Spiritual Message

Spiritual leaders often highlight that Thai Poosam is not merely a ritualistic observance but a reminder of inner strength and moral discipline. Lord Murugan is revered as a symbol of wisdom, courage, and youthful energy, inspiring devotees to overcome challenges through faith and perseverance.

The Prime Minister’s greetings echoed these sentiments, reinforcing the idea that festivals rooted in spiritual values play a vital role in nurturing social harmony and collective well-being.

Official Communication

The Prime Minister’s message was formally released through the Press Information Bureau, ensuring wide dissemination through official government channels. Such messages form part of the government’s broader engagement with citizens on culturally and spiritually significant occasions.
