Lead researcher Dr. Kristina Lang highlighted that AI enhances early identification of aggressive cancers, reduces interval cancers, and can relieve pressure on radiologists. Experts note that India, where 1.9 lakh women are diagnosed annually and nearly half under 45, could benefit greatly from AI-assisted screening adoption.
Union Budget 2026 Strengthens Healthcare Infrastructure
India’s Union Budget 2026, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, prioritizes healthcare, medical tourism, Ayurveda, and domestic pharmaceutical production. The budget allocated ₹10,000 crore for the Biopharma Shakti initiative to expand domestic production of biologics and biosimilars, supporting clinical research and reducing import dependence.
Import duties on 17 cancer drugs and seven rare disease medicines have been reduced, improving affordability for patients requiring chemotherapy and advanced treatments.
Five regional medical hubs will be developed across the country, integrating diagnostics, post-care rehabilitation, and AYUSH services, while ten new allied health disciplines will train one lakh professionals, strengthening support in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
Nutrition and Wellness Focus
The budget also promotes high-value crops like coconut, cocoa, cashew, walnuts, and sandalwood, enhancing national nutrition and public health. Health experts note these foods provide essential minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, and compounds that support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve immunity.
Ayurveda and yoga receive a push with 1.5 lakh caregivers to be trained in wellness services. New All India Institutes of Ayurveda will be established to improve education quality, standardize treatments, and strengthen India’s position in traditional and preventive healthcare globally.
Medical Tourism and Global Outreach
India aims to become a global medical tourism hub, with standardized regional centers enhancing international patient experience, of integrating advanced diagnostics, post-treatment rehabilitation, and wellness therapies. This is expected to improve healthcare infrastructure, generate employment, and attract global patients.
