Supreme Court Oversight
The disbursement is supervised by Justice R. Subhash Reddy, former Supreme Court judge, with assistance from Shri Gaurav Agarwal, Amicus Curiae. The Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies manages the online refund process, ensuring payments reach verified depositors directly into their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. Currently, the portal disburses up to ₹50,000 per verified depositor.
Portal-Based Digital Refunds
Launched on 18 July 2023, the CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal enables depositors of four Multi-State Cooperative Societies—Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Ltd. (Lucknow), Saharayn Universal Multipurpose Society Ltd. (Bhopal), Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd. (Kolkata), and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd. (Hyderabad)—to submit claims online. The process is completely digital and paperless, with a re-submission portal available for rectifying deficiencies in applications.
State-Wise Refunds
As of 20 January 2026, the highest number of depositors refunded include Uttar Pradesh with 10,79,800 applications amounting to ₹2,228.27 crore, followed by Bihar (9,68,713 applications, ₹1,892.89 crore) and Rajasthan (2,46,118 applications, ₹604.44 crore). State-wise distribution ensures equitable access to refunds across the country, although district-level or constituency-wise details are not maintained publicly.
Extension and Future Disbursement
The Supreme Court has approved an additional transfer of ₹5,000 crore from the Sahara-SEBI Refund Account to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies. The extended deadline for disbursement of refunds to depositors is set to 31 December 2026, ensuring that remaining depositors receive their legitimate dues promptly and securely.
This initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to safeguarding depositors’ interests and implementing a fully transparent, digital, and accountable process in compliance with the apex court’s directives.
