PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia After Meghalaya Mishap Tragedy

RR Team, February 5, 2026February 5, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a tragic mishap in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. Acknowledging the grief faced by the affected families, the Prime Minister announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for both the families of the deceased and those injured in the incident.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the challenges faced by remote and hilly regions in the Northeast, where difficult terrain and unpredictable conditions often complicate rescue and relief efforts. While details of the mishap are still emerging, the loss of precious lives has triggered condolences from across the political and social spectrum.

Ex-Gratia Assistance Announced

According to the official announcement, an ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh will be provided from the PMNRF to the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the mishap. Additionally, ₹50,000 will be extended to those who sustained injuries, offering immediate financial relief to help them cope with medical expenses and recovery.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) shared the message through its official handle on social media platform X, underlining the government’s commitment to standing with citizens during moments of crisis. Such financial assistance, though unable to compensate for the loss of life, is intended to provide timely support to grieving families.

Prime Minister’s Message of Condolence

In his message, Prime Minister Modi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for those injured. The PMO quoted him as saying that he was “pained by the mishap in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya,” reflecting the gravity of the incident.

The message further emphasized solidarity with the affected families, a gesture that has become a consistent feature of the Prime Minister’s response to major accidents and natural calamities across the country.

Focus on Relief and Response

Local authorities in Meghalaya have been working to manage the aftermath of the mishap, with emergency services deployed to the affected area. District officials and disaster response teams are ensuring that the injured receive prompt medical attention and that the families of the deceased are provided necessary assistance.

While the immediate priority remains relief and rehabilitation, the incident has once again highlighted the importance of safety measures and preparedness in regions prone to accidents due to geography and infrastructure constraints.

About PMNRF

The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund plays a crucial role in extending financial assistance during emergencies, including natural disasters, accidents, and other unforeseen tragedies. Contributions to the fund are utilized to provide swift relief to affected individuals and families.

More information about the PMNRF and its functioning can be accessed through the official government portal and releases issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Readers may refer to the official PIB update for verified details on this announcement.

Nation Stands with Meghalaya

As news of the mishap spread, messages of condolence poured in from various quarters, reflecting a collective sense of mourning. Leaders, civil society members, and citizens expressed solidarity with the people of Meghalaya during this difficult time.

The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with life in challenging terrains and the need for sustained efforts toward improving safety infrastructure. For now, the focus remains on healing, support, and ensuring that those affected are not left alone in their moment of grief.
