INS Sudarshini Completes First Lokayan 26 Port Call in Oman

RR Team, February 8, 2026February 9, 2026
The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini has successfully concluded her first port call at Salalah in Oman, marking a significant milestone in the ambitious ten-month trans-oceanic expedition, Lokayan 26. The visit, completed on February 5, 2026, underscores India’s enduring maritime legacy and reinforces the growing strategic and cultural ties between India and Oman.

Lokayan 26 is a flagship outreach initiative of the Indian Navy aimed at showcasing India’s centuries-old seafaring traditions while promoting the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the belief that the world is one family. INS Sudarshini’s maiden stopover during this voyage highlights India’s commitment to maritime diplomacy and global goodwill.

Strengthening India–Oman Naval Cooperation

During the port call, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini held meaningful interactions with senior officials of the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO). These included Captain Mohammad Al Ghailani, Southern Naval Area Commander, and Captain Mohammad Al Mahari, Commanding Officer of the RNO vessel Al Moazer.

The discussions reflected the deep-rooted historical seafaring connections between India and Oman, nations that have shared maritime trade routes and cultural exchanges for centuries. The engagements reaffirmed the strong professional camaraderie between the two navies and further strengthened the bridge of friendship and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

Professional Exchange and Cultural Engagement

As part of professional naval interaction, officers from the Royal Navy of Oman were invited aboard INS Sudarshini for a guided tour. The visit provided insights into the ship’s traditional sailing rig, navigational techniques, and the Indian Navy’s approach to sail training.

Beyond official engagements, the visit placed strong emphasis on people-to-people connections. INS Sudarshini was opened to the public, attracting more than 600 visitors, including schoolchildren and maritime enthusiasts. Visitors were introduced to the functioning of a three-masted barque and the fundamentals of ocean sailing.

A Living Symbol of Maritime Heritage

INS Sudarshini stands as a living embodiment of India’s maritime heritage. Designed to train naval cadets in traditional seamanship, the ship also serves as a floating ambassador of Indian culture, discipline, and naval professionalism.

The enthusiastic response from visitors in Salalah reflected the enduring fascination with sail-powered vessels and the shared maritime heritage of the Indian Ocean nations. Such engagements contribute significantly to mutual understanding and cultural diplomacy.

Continuing the Lokayan 26 Voyage

Following the successful conclusion of her first port call, INS Sudarshini has now set sail for the next leg of the Lokayan 26 expedition. The voyage will continue across multiple international ports, carrying forward India’s timeless maritime legacy.

With sails unfurled and spirits high, the ship continues to represent India’s values of friendship, cooperation, and goodwill across the seas. The Lokayan 26 mission reaffirms India’s role as a responsible maritime nation committed to peaceful engagement and global harmony.
