PM Engages Indian Diaspora Leaders, INA Veterans in Malaysia

RR Team, February 8, 2026February 9, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with distinguished members of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, including senior political leaders and veterans of the Azad Hind Fauj, reaffirming India’s deep people-to-people ties with the Southeast Asian nation. The engagement highlighted the significant role played by the Indian-origin community in Malaysia’s development and in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The interaction took place as part of the Prime Minister’s outreach to overseas Indians and leaders of Indian origin, reflecting New Delhi’s continued emphasis on diaspora diplomacy. Prime Minister Modi described the Indian community in Malaysia as a vital bridge connecting the two nations.

Participation of Prominent Diaspora Leaders

The meeting brought together several prominent Indian-origin leaders currently serving in the Malaysian government. Among those present were Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital; Dato’ Sri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, Minister of Human Resources; Tuan M. Kulasegaran, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department; and Tuan R. Yuneswaran, Deputy Minister of National Unity.

Members of Parliament and other senior representatives of the Indian-origin community also took part in the interaction. The Prime Minister acknowledged their role in public service and their contribution to fostering harmony and inclusive growth within Malaysia’s multicultural society.

Role of Indian Diaspora in Malaysia’s Progress

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the historical and contemporary contributions of the Indian diaspora to Malaysia’s social and economic development. He noted that generations of Indian-origin citizens have played an important role in building institutions, strengthening the economy, and promoting cultural diversity.

The Prime Minister also emphasised that the Indian diaspora has been instrumental in nurturing strong and enduring ties between India and Malaysia. According to him, shared cultural heritage and close community links have added depth to the bilateral relationship.

Strengthening the India-Malaysia Partnership

During the interaction, diaspora leaders expressed their appreciation for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in elevating India-Malaysia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They acknowledged India’s growing global stature and welcomed initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation across sectors.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to working closely with Malaysia in areas such as trade, digital technology, education, and human resource development. He said strong diaspora engagement further reinforces trust and cooperation between the two nations.

Welfare Measures for the Indian Community

A key focus of the interaction was the welfare of the Indian community in Malaysia. Diaspora leaders thanked the Prime Minister for several initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to support people of Indian origin.

These measures include India’s decision to open its first Consulate in Malaysia, aimed at improving consular services and outreach. The announcement of a Thiruvalluvar Center at Universiti Malaya was also welcomed as a step towards promoting Tamil language, culture, and scholarship.

The leaders further appreciated the institution of Thiruvalluvar scholarships, the extension of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards up to the sixth generation of Indian-origin people in Malaysia, and the replenishment of the Indian Scholarships Trust Fund with 3 million Malaysian Ringgit to benefit students.

Meeting with Azad Hind Fauj Veterans

Prime Minister Modi also met Dato’ Jeyaraj Raja Rao, a veteran of the Balak Sena of the Azad Hind Fauj, and Mr Rathakrishnan, President of the Netaji Welfare Foundation. The interaction was marked by deep respect and remembrance of the sacrifices made by members of the Indian National Army.

The Prime Minister expressed heartfelt appreciation for the courage and patriotism displayed by INA veterans in India’s freedom struggle. He reiterated the Government of India’s commitment to preserving Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy and vision of a strong and modern India.

Enduring Bonds and Shared Future

The engagement underscored the enduring bond between India and its diaspora in Malaysia, rooted in shared history and mutual respect. Prime Minister Modi said the success and well-being of overseas Indians remain a priority for the Government of India.

The interaction concluded on an optimistic note, with both sides expressing confidence that India-Malaysia ties, strengthened by vibrant diaspora connections, would continue to grow in the years ahead.
