Six-Lane Ganga Bridge to Open by April, Nitish Kumar Reviews Work

RR Team, February 9, 2026February 9, 2026
Bihar is set to witness a major leap in infrastructure and connectivity with the completion of the six-lane Kachchi Dargah–Bidupur road-cum-bridge over the river Ganga, expected to be opened to the public by April this year. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday reviewed the progress of the ambitious project, expressing satisfaction over the pace of work and directing officials to ensure timely completion.

Stretching across nearly 19.76 kilometres, the project comprises a 9.76-km-long six-lane bridge over the Ganga and approximately 10 kilometres of approach roads on both sides. Once operational, the bridge will significantly ease congestion on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and strengthen north-south connectivity across Bihar.

Inspection Highlights and Progress Update

During his visit to the Kachchi Dargah site in Patna, the chief minister inspected ongoing work on the bridge as well as the approach roads. Officials briefed him that a substantial portion of construction has already been completed and the remaining work is progressing as per schedule.

The Kachchi Dargah end of the bridge connects to National Highway-30 in Patna, while the Bidupur end links NH-103 in Vaishali district. This strategic alignment is expected to streamline traffic movement between the northern and southern regions of the state.

Third Mega Bridge Across the Ganga in Patna

With the completion of the Kachchi Dargah–Bidupur bridge, Patna will become home to three major bridges across the Ganga. These include the Mahatma Gandhi Setu, the JP Ganga Setu, and the upcoming six-lane bridge, marking a significant enhancement in urban and regional mobility.

The new bridge is expected to act as an alternative route for cross-river travel, reducing pressure on existing infrastructure and ensuring smoother vehicular movement, particularly during peak hours and emergencies.

Phased Construction and Connectivity Gains

The execution of the project has been divided into three phases. The first phase, providing 4.57-km connectivity from Kachchi Dargah to Raghopur Diara in Vaishali, was inaugurated by the chief minister on June 25 last year.

The second phase involves construction from the Hajipur-Mahnar NH-122B to Chaksikandarpur on NH-322, while work under the third phase from Raghopur Diara to Hajipur-Mahnar NH-122 is currently underway.

Boost to Economy, Healthcare and Regional Development

Emphasising the broader impact of the project, Nitish Kumar said the bridge would catalyse economic development by improving access to markets, healthcare and educational institutions. He highlighted its importance for farmers, industrial activity and faster emergency medical transportation.

The chief minister also noted that the upcoming Amas–Darbhanga Expressway would be linked with the Kachchi Dargah–Bidupur road, enabling seamless travel towards Samastipur, Darbhanga and Madhubani.

Focus on Timely Completion and Quality

Directing officials to conduct regular inspections, Nitish Kumar stressed that quality and timelines must not be compromised. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to building durable, world-class infrastructure to support Bihar’s long-term growth.

“We are consistently working to provide quality roads and bridges to ensure unencumbered connectivity and safe travel for the people,” the chief minister said during the inspection.
