Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day state visit to Bhutan commenced with a heartfelt welcome from his Bhutanese counterpart, Tshering Tobgay. As PM Modi stepped onto Bhutanese soil, he was affectionately addressed as ‘bade bhai’ (elder brother) by Tobgay, symbolizing the close bond between the two nations.
The welcoming ceremony took place at Paro airport, where PM Modi was personally received by Tshering Tobgay, followed by a ceremonial reception befitting the occasion. The entire route from Paro International Airport to Thimphu, the capital city, was adorned with Bhutanese citizens waving both Indian and Bhutanese flags, reflecting the warmth and enthusiasm of the Bhutanese people towards their distinguished guests.
This visit underscores the longstanding tradition of high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, underscoring India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, as highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs. Originally scheduled for March 21-22, the visit was postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Bhutan.
During his stay, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Tobgay. Both leaders aim to strengthen the partnership between their countries for mutual benefit by discussing various bilateral and regional interests.
PM Modi’s itinerary includes a visit to the Tashichho Dzong, a revered Buddhist monastery and the seat of the Bhutanese government. Additionally, he will inaugurate the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu, a modern healthcare facility supported by the Indian Government.
