National Productivity Week 2026 Kicks Off at NPC

RR Team, February 13, 2026February 14, 2026
The National Productivity Council (NPC) marked its 68th Foundation Day on February 12, 2026, launching National Productivity Week with a strong emphasis on strengthening India’s productivity ecosystem and global competitiveness. The national-level event held at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi brought together policymakers, industry leaders, MSMEs, and academic experts to accelerate productivity-driven economic transformation.

Observed from February 12 to 18, National Productivity Week is being implemented across NPC’s nationwide network, including regional directorates, local productivity councils, state governments, and industry associations. The initiative aims to boost productivity awareness and promote efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth in India’s industrial and MSME sectors.

Productivity Critical for India’s $30 Trillion Economic Vision

Delivering the keynote address, Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Chairman of NPC and Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), highlighted productivity as a cornerstone of India’s economic ambitions. He outlined the importance of integrating Indian manufacturing into global value chains while strengthening domestic industrial capabilities.

He emphasized that productivity improvements are essential for competitive pricing, operational efficiency, and global market participation. India’s flagship initiatives, including Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, are enabling domestic industries to expand globally while strengthening self-reliance.

According to him, regulatory simplification, compliance reduction, startup promotion, tax reforms, and tariff rationalization are key policy measures helping Indian enterprises enhance competitiveness. These reforms, combined with technological upgrades and process improvements, are positioning Indian MSMEs to emerge as globally competitive manufacturing players.

MSME Clusters Identified as Engines of Productivity

The theme for National Productivity Week 2026, “Clusters as Growth Engine: Maximizing Productivity in MSMEs,” reflects the growing importance of cluster-based industrial development. Experts noted that clusters allow shared access to infrastructure, testing facilities, design centers, and innovation networks.

This collaborative ecosystem improves efficiency, reduces operational costs, and enhances knowledge exchange among enterprises. NPC leadership emphasized the need to strengthen productivity culture at the shop-floor level while expanding outreach programs to MSMEs across India.

Industry leaders also stressed the importance of academic partnerships, specialized productivity services, and international collaboration. NPC’s engagement with global productivity organizations is expected to further strengthen India’s industrial productivity standards.

Focus on Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Industrial Growth

The event featured technical sessions on eco-industrial clusters and sustainable manufacturing practices. Experts highlighted the importance of integrating energy efficiency into industrial operations to reduce costs and environmental impact.

Officials from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency emphasized that sustainable production systems not only improve productivity but also strengthen India’s long-term industrial resilience. Industry experts also shared global best practices in lean manufacturing, supply chain optimization, and resource efficiency.

Case studies from Indian manufacturing companies demonstrated how productivity-focused approaches, including digital transformation and process optimization, are improving operational performance and competitiveness.

Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation Take Center Stage

NPC Director General Neerja Sekhar highlighted the organization’s efforts to prepare Indian enterprises for Industry 4.0 transformation. NPC has introduced an Industry 4.0 Readiness Assessment Framework to help companies evaluate their preparedness for adopting advanced technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing systems.

The council also announced plans for an Indian Productivity Rating System to benchmark productivity levels across sectors. Additionally, new frameworks such as export readiness assessments and sector-specific productivity standards will help Indian businesses align with global requirements.

NPC is also establishing a Learning and Development Centre aimed at integrating productivity tools into entrepreneurial training programs. These initiatives are expected to equip MSMEs with modern productivity techniques and improve workforce capabilities.

Youth Engagement and Global Collaboration Strengthened

NPC is expanding its outreach through youth engagement initiatives, including competitions and productivity awareness programs. The proposed “Pro-Talks” platform will encourage knowledge sharing among professionals, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.

NPC also announced the establishment of the India Centre for BRICS Industrial Competencies, which will strengthen international cooperation and promote knowledge exchange in industrial productivity.

These initiatives reflect India’s growing leadership role in global productivity networks and its commitment to building a competitive and innovation-driven economy.

Productivity Movement Key to India’s Economic Transformation

The launch of National Productivity Week 2026 reinforces India’s focus on productivity as a key driver of economic growth, employment, and global competitiveness. By strengthening MSMEs, promoting sustainable manufacturing, and accelerating digital transformation, NPC aims to support India’s transition into a major global manufacturing hub.

As India continues its economic expansion, productivity improvements will remain central to ensuring efficiency, innovation, and long-term industrial sustainability. National Productivity Week serves as a platform to accelerate this transformation and empower Indian enterprises to compete successfully in global markets.
