During the Holi festival’s Bhasma aarti ceremony at Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple, a fire broke out, injuring 14 priests, as confirmed by authorities. The incident occurred when gulal, utilized in the festive celebrations, accidentally ignited a puja thali containing burning camphor, causing the fire to rapidly spread, according to eyewitnesses.
The temple’s CCTV cameras captured the event, aiding in the investigation. An official stated, “Fourteen priests sustained burn injuries. While some are being treated at the local district hospital, eight have been transferred to Indore for medical care. A comprehensive magisterial inquiry, overseen by Zila Panchayat CEO Mrinal Meena and Additional Collector Anukool Jain, has commenced, with a report anticipated within three days.”
Despite the presence of numerous individuals, including dignitaries, within the temple premises, no devotees were harmed. The injured, including temple staff and the head priest of Sanjay Guru, were promptly evacuated to a nearby medical facility.
Expressing regret over the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav assured that the situation is now under control. “I am personally monitoring the situation. A thorough investigation has been initiated to prevent similar mishaps in the future. Stringent action will be taken against those found responsible,” he affirmed.
Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured, emphasizing the local administration’s efforts to provide assistance and treatment. Meanwhile, State ministers Kailash Vijayvargiya and Tulsi Ram Silawat visited the eight injured priests undergoing treatment in Indore, offering support and solidarity.
