PM Modi Meets Greek PM Mitsotakis in Delhi

RR Team, February 19, 2026February 19, 2026

New Delhi, February 19: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met his Greek counterpart, H.E. Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, reviewing the expanding India–Greece strategic partnership and exploring new avenues of cooperation.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis is in India from February 18–19 to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026. He was accompanied by Mr. Dimitrios Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance, along with a delegation of senior officials.

According to the official release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and noted steady progress across diverse sectors.

Strategic Partnership Gains Momentum

India and Greece elevated their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Athens on August 25, 2023. Since then, engagement between the two countries has intensified, marked by high-level visits and sectoral collaborations.

This is Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ second visit to India. He had earlier undertaken a State visit in February 2024, the first visit by a Greek Head of Government to India in 15 years. Both leaders acknowledged that these exchanges have infused fresh energy into the partnership.

During their latest meeting, they discussed pathways to further strengthen cooperation in emerging areas while also exchanging views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Focus on Connectivity and IMEC

Connectivity initiatives featured prominently in the discussions. The two leaders appreciated recent progress under regional connectivity frameworks and emphasized the potential for further expansion under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

IMEC is seen as a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing trade routes, infrastructure integration and economic cooperation between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Both sides agreed that improved connectivity would bolster trade, logistics and people-to-people exchanges.

They also recognized that closer cooperation in maritime and digital connectivity could open new commercial and strategic opportunities.

Trade, Investment and India–EU Framework

The leaders welcomed the recent conclusion of the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), noting that it would create new avenues for trade and investment between India and Greece.

As a key member of the European Union, Greece stands to benefit from enhanced economic engagement with India. The two Prime Ministers discussed ways to leverage the FTA framework to expand business linkages and investment flows.

India’s expanding economic footprint and Greece’s strategic location in the Mediterranean region were highlighted as complementary strengths that can drive bilateral growth.

AI and Digital Governance Cooperation

Given the context of the AI Impact Summit, digital transformation and artificial intelligence were natural areas of focus. Greece’s participation in the summit underscores the growing convergence between the two nations in digital governance and technology-driven development.

The presence of Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance reflected the importance both countries attach to technological collaboration. The leaders emphasized responsible innovation, cybersecurity cooperation and the use of emerging technologies for inclusive growth.

India’s digital initiatives, including Digital India, continue to shape its global partnerships in technology and governance. Further details on these initiatives are available at https://www.digitalindia.gov.in.

Looking Ahead

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both governments to sustain high-level political engagement and deepen cooperation in strategic sectors. The leaders expressed satisfaction at the pace of progress and conveyed confidence that the partnership would continue to expand.

As India strengthens its engagement with Europe, Greece remains a significant partner in the Mediterranean region. The dialogue in New Delhi underscored a shared vision of economic resilience, digital innovation and regional stability.

With regular exchanges and expanding cooperation frameworks, the India–Greece strategic partnership appears poised for further growth in the coming years.
