PM Modi to Launch Namo Bharat, Meerut Metro Feb 22

RR Team, February 20, 2026February 20, 2026
Meerut: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Meerut on February 22 to inaugurate and dedicate development projects worth approximately ₹12,930 crore, including the full Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor and India’s fastest Meerut Metro.

Major Boost to Urban Mobility

The Prime Minister will flag off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train from Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station at around 12:30 PM. He will then undertake a metro ride up to Meerut South Station, showcasing the integrated transit system.

At approximately 1 PM, he will formally inaugurate and dedicate multiple development projects to the nation and address a public gathering.

Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor Completed

A key highlight of the visit is the dedication of the entire 82-kilometre Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. This includes the inauguration of the remaining sections of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

The newly opened stretches include a 5-km segment between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and a 21-km section from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.

Designed for a maximum speed of 180 km per hour, Namo Bharat trains aim to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut.

Sarai Kale Khan station, the originating point of the corridor, will serve as a major multi-modal transport hub. It connects seamlessly with Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT and Ring Road, strengthening last-mile connectivity.

India’s Fastest Metro: Meerut Metro

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Meerut Metro services operating between Meerut South and Modipuram. Notably, this is the first time in India that a metro system and a regional rapid rail service will operate on the same infrastructure.

The Meerut Metro will have a maximum operational speed of around 120 km per hour, making it the fastest metro service in the country. The entire stretch will be covered in approximately 30 minutes, including all scheduled stops.

This integrated model is expected to offer seamless high-speed intercity travel along with efficient intra-city commuting. Officials believe the system will significantly decongest roads and reduce vehicular carbon emissions.

Setting a New Benchmark

The combined Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro initiative sets a benchmark for integrated urban and regional transit in India. It aligns with the government’s broader vision of modern, sustainable public transportation systems.

The project is expected to improve ease of living by ensuring faster, safer and more reliable connectivity across the National Capital Region.

For further information on infrastructure initiatives, readers can refer to updates from the National Portal of India.

Transforming Public Transport

The Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor represents India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System, designed to bridge distances between metropolitan hubs and nearby cities.

By integrating high-speed regional trains with a modern metro network, the project reflects a shift toward coordinated infrastructure planning. As Meerut prepares to host the Prime Minister, the spotlight remains firmly on the transformative potential of this landmark mobility initiative.
