Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in his message read during the function, highlighted the importance of ensuring that the Constitution and legal provisions are understandable to all citizens. He appreciated the efforts of the Legislative Department in simplifying language and releasing the updated Constitution in Gujarati and Tamil, alongside the latest English–Hindi Legal Glossary.
The Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, praised the Legislative Department’s work and elaborated on the historical context of International Mother Language Day, recalling the 1952 movement in East Pakistan to preserve the Bengali language against Urdu imposition. He also referred to UNESCO and UN General Assembly resolutions recognizing linguistic diversity and highlighted the release of the Santhali version of the Constitution on 25 December 2025.
Dr. Rajiv Mani, Secretary of the Legislative Department, detailed the department’s initiatives in translating and updating the Constitution, including the Gujarati and Tamil editions and the 8th edition of the Legal Glossary. He recognized the contributions of the Regional Languages Unit, Official Languages Wing, and other officers of the department in ensuring accuracy and accessibility across India’s multilingual population.
With these releases, the Government of India continues its efforts to strengthen linguistic inclusivity and enhance citizens’ access to constitutional and legal knowledge. The updated editions aim to foster legal literacy and encourage engagement with India’s democratic framework across regional and linguistic lines.
These initiatives underscore the commitment of India’s leadership to respect and promote the nation’s rich linguistic heritage while making governance and legal information more citizen-friendly.
