Afghanistan Launches Offensive Ops Against Pakistan

RR Team, February 27, 2026February 27, 2026
Afghanistan has announced the launch of large-scale offensive operations against Pakistani military positions along the Durand Line, marking a serious escalation in tensions between the two neighbouring countries. The development was confirmed by Taliban administration spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid in a statement posted on social media late Thursday.

Taliban Statement Signals Escalation

According to the statement, the offensive operations were launched “in response to repeated provocations and violations by Pakistani military circles.” The Taliban administration alleged that Pakistani forces carried out airstrikes and cross-border actions that triggered the retaliation.

The operations reportedly target Pakistani military positions and installations situated along the disputed Durand Line, the 2,600-kilometre border that separates Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Background of Border Tensions

The Afghanistan-Pakistan border has remained volatile for years, with both sides accusing each other of harbouring militant elements and violating territorial sovereignty. Recent months have seen a spike in cross-border firing and air operations, further straining diplomatic relations.

Pakistan has previously claimed that militant groups operating from Afghan territory have carried out attacks on its security forces. Kabul, on the other hand, has denied such allegations and accused Islamabad of conducting air raids inside Afghan territory.

Durand Line: A Longstanding Flashpoint

The Durand Line has historically been a contentious issue between the two nations. While Pakistan recognises it as the official international border, successive Afghan governments have disputed its legitimacy.

Security analysts note that any escalation along this frontier carries regional implications, especially at a time when South Asia faces complex geopolitical shifts and security challenges.

Regional and Global Implications

The latest development raises concerns about broader instability in the region. Cross-border military engagements between Afghanistan and Pakistan risk further displacement of civilians living near the frontier areas.

Global observers are closely monitoring the situation, as any sustained conflict could affect regional trade routes and counter-terrorism cooperation. The international community has previously urged both nations to resolve disputes through dialogue.

No Immediate Casualty Figures Confirmed

As of publication, there has been no independent confirmation of casualties or damage resulting from the reported offensive operations. Both governments have yet to release detailed operational assessments.

Military tensions between the two sides have flared periodically in the past, but the announcement of “large-scale offensive operations” marks one of the strongest worded responses in recent months.

Call for De-escalation

Strategic experts warn that sustained military escalation could destabilise border provinces on both sides. Diplomatic backchannels may play a crucial role in preventing further confrontation.

Observers emphasise that a measured and transparent approach is essential to avoid prolonged conflict in an already sensitive region.
