US President Joe Biden issued a warning about the possibility of Iran launching an attack on Israel, stating, “I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later.” His remarks came amid escalating tensions following Israeli strikes that resulted in the deaths of seven Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards.
Biden reaffirmed the US commitment to defending Israel, citing the deployment of additional defence assets to West Asia in response to Hezbollah’s claim of firing “dozens of Katyusha rockets” at Israeli positions.
Hezbollah’s missile attack was reportedly a retaliatory measure against Israeli strikes in the south, as claimed by the Iran-backed Lebanese group.
The White House reiterated the ongoing threat of Iranian strikes, especially in light of Israel’s recent attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of three Iranian generals.
The Israeli military reported intercepting approximately 40 launches from Lebanese territory, including two Hezbollah attack drones, with no reported injuries.
The violence has led to casualties on both sides, with Lebanon recording at least 363 deaths, primarily Hezbollah fighters, and at least 70 civilians. In Israel, the toll stands at 10 soldiers and eight civilians killed.
The escalating situation has prompted tens of thousands of civilians to flee their homes along the border, raising concerns about the potential for a broader regional conflict.
