As reported by Aman Sharma and edited by Apoorva Misra for News18.com, this article delves into the implications of PM Modi’s ‘Health Insurance for 70+’ Scheme, highlighting its potential to provide relief to the middle class and bolster the BJP’s prospects in the 2024 electoral arena.
With over six crore senior citizens in India poised to benefit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to expand medical insurance coverage under Ayushman Bharat to all individuals aged 70 and above could have significant ramifications if the BJP secures power.
According to insights from a Union minister, the decision to incorporate this provision into the manifesto was informed by widespread public input. Typically, most medical insurance providers shy away from extending coverage to individuals in this age group, citing anticipated high claim rates. Moreover, the few insurers who do offer coverage often impose exorbitant annual premiums, placing a financial burden on middle-class families.
Additionally, the presence of pre-existing ailment clauses and waiting periods renders these policies ineffective for several years, despite the substantial premiums paid. This is especially concerning given that individuals aged 70 and above are more susceptible to serious health conditions such as heart disease, kidney ailments, and respiratory or neurological disorders.
The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates the situation, with individuals in this demographic facing increased vulnerability due to compromised immunity. Many require costly medical treatments, presenting a financial challenge for middle-class households.
A BJP representative emphasized the significance of this initiative, considering the substantial demographic of over six crore individuals aged 70 and above. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari lauded the PM for his compassionate gesture towards individuals in his own age group.
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, already providing free medical insurance of Rs 5 lakh per year to economically disadvantaged families, will now extend its coverage to every individual aged 70 and above, as pledged by the BJP.
