Home Minister Amit Shah has remarked on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail, emphasizing that it wasn’t a routine decision and suggesting that many perceive it as “special treatment.” Shah also criticized Kejriwal for making assurances despite AAP’s limited electoral contestation.
In a statement following Kejriwal’s bail for election campaigning, Shah expressed concerns over Kejriwal’s remarks implying impunity for electoral success, viewing it as contemptuous towards the Supreme Court. He urged the judges to reflect on how their decision might be interpreted or misused.
Responding to queries about the judgment, Shah highlighted that many perceive the decision as unconventional, hinting at preferential treatment. He debunked Kejriwal’s claims about surveillance in Tihar Jail, affirming the jail’s administration falls under the Delhi government.
Mocking Kejriwal’s electoral promises given AAP’s limited Lok Sabha seat contestation, Shah advised against taking Kejriwal’s assurances too seriously, questioning AAP’s capacity to form a government with only 22 seats.
Shah also pointed out that Kejriwal was granted interim relief, not regular bail, and highlighted the conditions set by the Supreme Court, including Kejriwal’s return to jail after June 1.
Kejriwal, arrested in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor scam, received interim bail on May 10 for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections. He is required to surrender on June 2, a day after the final phase of polling in Delhi.
