New Delhi, May 20, 2024 – The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) joined forces with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today to improve animal health in India. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on three key areas:
-
Digitalization of Vaccine Cold Chain Management: This initiative aims to modernize vaccine storage and transportation using real-time monitoring and artificial intelligence. This will ensure vaccines stay at the optimal temperature (2-8 degrees Celsius) throughout the supply chain, maximizing effectiveness.
-
Capacity Building: The program will provide technical assistance to the Central Animal Husbandry Institute (CEAH) to enhance expertise in animal husbandry practices. Training will also extend to other stakeholders to improve overall knowledge and skills in the sector.
-
Communication Planning: Developing a clear communication strategy will ensure better outreach and public awareness of DAHD’s activities. This will help educate farmers and animal caregivers about best practices and available resources.
This collaboration addresses the challenges of India’s vast livestock population (over 138 crore animals) and geographically dispersed farming communities. By leveraging UNDP’s global experience and DAHD’s leadership, the partnership aims to create a robust, efficient, and inclusive system for managing animal health across the country.
Key Quotes:
-
Smt. Alka Upadhyay, Secretary, DAHD: “Digitalization can address inequities in vaccine supply and ensure vaccines reach animals in the right quantity, quality, and temperature.”
-
Ms. Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Resident Representative in India: “This partnership strengthens India’s animal vaccine supply chain, protecting communities and animals at the human-animal-environment interface.”
-
Smt Sarita Chauhan, Joint Secretary (LH), DAHD: “New age technology will enable real-time monitoring of the cold chain infrastructure, ensuring efficient vaccine delivery.”
The MoU also includes exploring support for developing an effective livestock insurance program. This comprehensive approach signifies a significant step towards enhanced animal health and improved livelihoods for farmers in India.
