The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has taken the decision to cancel the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination due to preliminary indications of compromised exam integrity. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced this cancellation on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for transparency and maintaining the sanctity of the examination process.
In a statement, the ministry stated, “To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India has decided that the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination be cancelled.” It further added that details about a fresh examination will be provided separately. Concurrently, the matter has been referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (C.B.I.) for a thorough investigation.
M Jagadesh Kumar, a UGC chairperson, disclosed that approximately 81% of the registered candidates, totalling over 11.21 lakh, had appeared for the UGC-NET exam held in 317 cities across the country.
UGC-NET is a crucial examination for assessing the eligibility of Indian nationals for roles such as ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in universities and colleges across India. Conducted by the NTA in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode, the exam was held nationwide on June 18.
The UGC-NET examination cycle typically occurs twice a year in June and December, aiming to streamline the process with the concurrence of the UGC. The exam covers 83 subjects and is conducted in selected cities nationwide.
This decision follows recent controversies surrounding other examinations like NEET, which have also faced allegations of irregularities.
