Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina engaged in comprehensive discussions on June 22 to enhance cooperation in various fields, particularly focusing on trade and connectivity. The two leaders signed several significant agreements, including those aimed at strengthening ties in the maritime sector and promoting the blue economy.
Key agreements included initiatives to fortify digital connectivity and foster a “green partnership.” The discussions also resulted in an agreement to improve railway connectivity between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the forward-looking nature of the agreements, emphasizing benefits for the youth of both countries in areas like digital partnership, green initiatives, blue economy, and space cooperation. “Today we have prepared a futuristic vision for cooperation in new areas,” Modi stated to the media.
Sheikh Hasina lauded India as a vital neighbor and a reliable friend, recalling the historic ties forged during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971. “India is our major neighbor, trusted friend, and regional partner. Bangladesh greatly values our relations with India, which were born out of the War of Liberation in 1971,” Hasina remarked. She expressed gratitude for India’s support during Bangladesh’s independence and honored the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the war.
This visit marks the first incoming bilateral state visit to India following the recent Lok Sabha elections. Sheikh Hasina’s two-day visit began on June 21. In a social media post, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the significance of the visit, noting the numerous meetings between the two leaders since 2019 that have transformed bilateral relations.
During her visit, Sheikh Hasina paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, where she laid a floral wreath and was presented with a book and a bust of Gandhi. She also received a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by key Indian ministers.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other Union Ministers welcomed the Bangladeshi Prime Minister. The visit is expected to significantly bolster the relationship between India and Bangladesh, reflecting their shared history, culture, and geographical proximity.
In recent years, both nations have undertaken various initiatives to strengthen their ties. In 2023, the leaders jointly inaugurated the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline and participated in the Voice of the Global South Summit sessions, further cementing their collaborative efforts.
