India is set to host the 64th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting in New Delhi from June 25th to 27th, 2024. The event will see delegates from more than 30 countries, along with representatives from numerous international organizations, discussing critical issues related to the sugar and biofuel sectors.
Given India’s status as the world’s largest consumer and second-largest producer of sugar, the ISO Council has appointed India as the Chair for 2024. To kick off the meeting, international delegates will tour a grain-based distillery in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, on June 24th, 2024, showcasing India’s advancements in biofuel production and related technologies.
On June 25th, a workshop titled ‘Sugar and Biofuels – Emerging Vistas’ will be held at Bharat Mandapam, inaugurated by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New & Renewable Energy. The workshop will feature participation from international delegates, top management of Indian sugar mills, industry associations like ISMA and NFCSF, and technical experts. This platform will allow over 200 delegates from various global organizations to discuss the future of the sugar sector, biofuels, sustainability, and the role of farmers. The event aims to strengthen the Global Biofuel Alliance, an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to promote sustainable biofuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With many ISO member countries also part of the Global Biofuel Alliance, this forum serves to expand the alliance’s efforts.
The International Sugar Organization (ISO), a UN-affiliated body headquartered in London, comprises about 85 member countries, representing nearly 90% of the world’s sugar production. ISO aims to foster mutual understanding among major sugar-producing, consuming, and trading nations, addressing sector-related issues. Additionally, ISO focuses on biofuels, particularly ethanol, with sugarcane being a significant feedstock for ethanol production globally.
A cultural program on the evening of June 25th will provide a glimpse into India’s diverse and rich culture for the international delegates.
On June 26th and 27th, various ISO committee meetings will focus on the administrative and functional aspects of the organization, including presentations of economic studies conducted by ISO experts. Shri Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution and Chairman of the ISO, will chair these meetings.
The program will conclude with a guided tour of the Red Fort in New Delhi on the evening of June 27th, followed by a visit to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library on June 28th.
The week-long event will blend discussions, academic studies, and administrative functions related to the sugar and biofuel sectors, highlighting India’s leadership in these fields.
