Tapan Kumar Deka, the current head of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been granted a one-year extension beyond June 30, 2024. A seasoned counter-terrorism expert and a 1988 batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Deka has played a crucial role in several key operations.
During his tenure, Deka has led successful campaigns against left-wing extremism, notably confining Maoists to the Bastar district in Chhattisgarh. He is also recognized for his pivotal efforts in tackling northeast insurgency and dismantling the Indian Mujahideen.
Currently on an official visit to Washington DC, Deka has previously served as joint director (operations) for the IB, handling Islamic extremism in India for over two decades. His extensive experience in the northeast since the 1990s makes him an expert on insurgencies in that region.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his extension, highlighting his exceptional service. This decision relaxes provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rule, 1958.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah was seen with Deka at the IB headquarters, emphasizing the importance of his contributions to national security.
Throughout his career, Deka has been instrumental in significant operations, including investigating the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and ensuring justice was served. He has also worked in the US and was a key figure in dismantling the Pakistan-sponsored Indian Mujahideen group.
