Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised the Honourable Lok Sabha Speaker for his strong condemnation of the Emergency and the excesses that followed.
In a message on X, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation:
“I am pleased that the Honourable Speaker condemned the Emergency and brought attention to the abuses committed during that period. He also highlighted how democracy was suppressed. It was a thoughtful gesture to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of those who suffered during those times.
Although the Emergency was imposed 50 years ago, it is crucial for today’s youth to learn about it. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences when the Constitution is undermined, public opinion is silenced, and institutions are dismantled. The events of the Emergency clearly illustrate what a dictatorship entails.”
