The Congress party wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP MP Anurag Thakur made inaccurate and misleading statements in the House.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore requested that the Speaker invoke Direction 115(1) and initiate appropriate action. Under Direction 115(1), an MP must write to the Speaker to highlight any inaccuracies in statements made by another MP.
Tagore highlighted several claims made by PM Modi, including the assertion that Congress falsely promised Rs 8,500 per month to women. Tagore clarified that this was a conditional promise upon winning and forming a government.
The Congress also disputed Modi’s claim that the party’s vote share had declined in 16 states, noting that their vote share increased in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Additionally, the Congress called Modi’s statement about the lack of bulletproof jackets for the Army during their rule “grossly misleading,” explaining that there was a shortage but not a complete absence of jackets, citing the Mumbai attacks as an example where police had such jackets.
The Congress also refuted Modi’s claim that the Congress did not provide fighter jets to the Army, listing aircraft like the Mig 29, Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and Sukhoi SU 30 that were procured during their tenure.
Regarding Anurag Thakur’s speech on July 1, the Congress pointed out inaccuracies in his claims about the Army’s lack of arms and fighter jets under Congress rule. They listed several military assets acquired during their governance, including nuclear bombs and missiles like Agni, Prithvi, Aakash, Nag, Trishul, and Brahmos.
Furthermore, the Congress contested Thakur’s claim that 25 crore people were brought out of poverty and questioned his statement that the PM had not taken a single holiday, asking about the type of leave used for election campaigns.
