The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for parts of central Maharashtra on July 7 and 8, following intense rainfall across the region. Matheran, recording 22 cm of rain, has registered the highest rainfall in India over the past 24 hours.
The alert signifies preparedness for very heavy rainfall expected over the next five days, with Mumbai’s neighboring districts of Thane and Raigad experiencing ongoing heavy rains causing localized flooding in areas like Shahpur, Palghar, and Panvel. Additionally, a red alert has been issued for Uttarakhand on July 7.
IMD’s classification defines heavy rain as 64.5-115.5 mm, very heavy rain as 115.6-204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as above 204.4 mm.
The forecast predicts isolated heavy rainfall in Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra from July 9-11, with similar conditions expected in other regions such as Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam. Further alerts and updates are available through IMD’s official channels.
