Gautam Gambhir has been appointed head coach of the senior India men’s cricket team, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on Tuesday, July 9. Gambhir, 42, will begin his tenure with the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka starting on July 27, featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is.
Gambhir replaces Rahul Dravid, who served as head coach from November 2022 to June 2024, leading India to the T20 World Cup victory in 2024 and the ICC World Test Championship final in 2023.
The BCCI highlighted Gambhir’s role in developing a culture of excellence, discipline, teamwork, and nurturing young talent. Despite no prior coaching experience, Gambhir has been a mentor in IPL teams, including the Kolkata Knight Riders, and has a distinguished playing career, featuring in India’s 2007 and 2011 World Cup-winning teams.
Jay Shah expressed confidence in Gambhir’s vision and experience, while Gambhir shared his commitment to making India proud. The BCCI also thanked Dravid for his successful tenure, marked by strategic understanding and leadership.
BCCI President Roger Binny welcomed Gambhir, expressing optimism about his leadership and vision for Indian cricket’s future.
