In the aftermath of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailment in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda, the train’s driver claimed he heard a loud explosion just before several coaches derailed. However, DGP Prashant Kumar denied any explosion was involved in the accident.
At least three people lost their lives, and numerous injuries were reported. Medical and emergency teams are actively working at the site.
The driver reported applying emergency brakes after hearing an explosion, according to government sources. A passenger also corroborated hearing an explosion before feeling a strong jolt leading to the derailment.
Eight coaches of the train, traveling to Dibrugarh, derailed between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations. The derailment resulted in two fatalities and several injuries. A 40-member medical team and 15 ambulances are on-site, with more assistance on the way. Senior officials are overseeing the rescue operations, approximately 150 km from Lucknow.
Deputy Chief Minister Pathak stated that their priority is to save lives and provide the best possible treatment to the injured. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the situation, directing local authorities to assist affected passengers and ensure proper medical care. A high-level probe has been ordered, with compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 2.5 lakh for those with serious injuries. Minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000 each.
Relief operations have commenced, with helpline numbers provided for assistance. The Indian Railways has dispatched medical vans and started the relief operation.
