Kargil Diwas 2024 marks the anniversary of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War, when Indian forces reclaimed occupied positions in Northern Kargil District, Ladakh.
On this 25th anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Kargil War Memorial to pay tribute to the 545 martyrs. The day is celebrated annually on July 26 to honor India’s victory and the bravery of its soldiers.
On the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, army personnel held a candlelight tribute at the Drass War Memorial during the ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ event. PM Modi, in a social media post, highlighted the significance of the day and announced his visit to the War Memorial. He also mentioned the commencement of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, which will improve connectivity to Leh.
The Kargil War Memorial, also known as the Dras War Memorial, was established by the Indian Army to honor the soldiers’ sacrifices. Located near the Line of Control in Ladakh, it stands as a reminder of the 1999 conflict.
In a recent statement, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan emphasized that the soldiers’ sacrifices in the Kargil War will continue to inspire future generations.
