Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, who holds several portfolios including Science & Technology and Public Grievances, emphasized a robust joint campaign by the administration and police against illegal mining, drug trafficking, and bovine smuggling. Speaking at the “Empowering Youth for Viksit Bharat” programme at Government Degree College in Hiranagar, Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, he urged all societal segments to support ongoing efforts to combat these issues.
Dr. Singh made it clear that no one involved in these illegal activities would be spared, regardless of their influence or political ties. He stressed the need for societal involvement in eradicating drug abuse, cattle smuggling, and illegal mining, highlighting the threat these activities pose to future generations.
Addressing the college administration, Dr. Singh recommended special educational sessions to inform students about the dangers of drug use, underscoring the need to protect the youth, who are the future builders of a prosperous India. He called for a societal pledge to combat these illegal activities and reinforce government efforts for transparency and honest governance.
Dr. Singh also spoke about severing the connection between terrorists and drug traffickers. He noted that Village Defence Groups (VDGs) have been fortified with advanced weaponry and that security strategies have been recalibrated to effectively address terrorism in the region.
The Minister highlighted the rapid development in Kathua district over the past decade, citing North India’s first biotech park as a notable achievement that provides self-employment opportunities for local youth.
Following his address, Dr. Singh, along with Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas, conducted a public meeting to hear and resolve citizens’ grievances. Many issues were addressed on the spot, with directives given for timely resolution in line with the principles of Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation).
