The Pentagon has confirmed the deployment of additional US fighter jets and navy warships to the Middle East as Israel contends with the combined threats from Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has approved the deployment of Navy cruisers and destroyers equipped to intercept ballistic missiles, alongside an extra squadron of fighter jets. The Pentagon stated that these adjustments are aimed at enhancing US force protection, bolstering support for Israel’s defense, and ensuring readiness for various contingencies, underscoring an “ironclad” commitment to Israel.
The heightened military presence comes in response to recent events, including the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, which have been linked to Israel. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed retaliation, describing it as Iran’s “duty” to avenge Haniyeh’s death.
Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of orchestrating the assassinations, though Israel has neither confirmed nor denied the claims. Reports suggest that Israel briefed the US and other Western nations on the operation shortly after it occurred.
The White House anticipates that Iran’s response could mirror the extensive missile and drone attack it launched against Israel on April 13, with concerns that any forthcoming assault could be more extensive and involve coordinated efforts with Iranian proxies.
