The number of deaths from flash floods triggered by cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 13, with four more bodies recovered from Mandi and Shimla districts on Sunday. Over 40 people remain missing after a series of cloudbursts struck Kullu’s Nirmand, Sainj, and Malana, Mandi’s Padhar, and Shimla’s Rampur subdivision on the night of July 31, causing widespread devastation.
Authorities reported that the bodies of Sonam (23) and three-month-old Manvi were found in Rajbhan village in Mandi district’s Padhar area. Later, two more bodies were discovered near Dhakoli on the banks of the Satluj River in Rampur, awaiting identification, according to Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi.
Intensified Rescue Operations
Rescue teams have ramped up efforts, deploying additional machinery, sniffer dog squads, drones, and other equipment. However, locals reported a lack of electricity in three villages—Samej, Dhara Sarda, and Kushwa—situated on the border of Shimla and Kullu since the disaster occurred.
A total of 410 rescuers from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, CISF, Himachal Pradesh Police, and home guards are involved in the search operations. Four more JCB machines have been deployed, and with the water flow decreasing, machines have reached areas where missing persons are likely to be found, according to Up-pradhan Sarpara C L Negi.
Missing Persons and Local Impact
In Samej village, Gram Panchayat Sarpara in Rampur subdivision, over 30 people are missing. The flash floods have left the villages without electricity and damaged roads, said local villager Megva Devi.
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur visited Samej village to assess the situation and meet with the affected residents.
Government Response
The state government announced immediate relief of Rs 50,000 for the victims. Additionally, affected families will receive Rs 5,000 monthly for rent for the next three months, along with gas, food, and other essential items.
