The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) celebrated its 8th Foundation Day today with significant milestones to highlight. As of August 8, 2024, the platform has achieved a procurement volume of ₹1,92,433 crore for FY 2024-25, marking an impressive 136% growth compared to the same period last year. GeM is on track to set new records in the current fiscal year.
Service procurement on the GeM platform has also seen a substantial rise, with the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of services reaching ₹3.91 lakh crore since its inception. In FY 2024-25 alone, service procurement has already totaled ₹80,493 crore. The platform has consistently recorded 100% year-on-year growth over the last three fiscal years, fulfilling 62.86 lakh orders worth approximately ₹4.03 lakh crore in GMV during FY 2023-24. Currently, over 1.5 lakh government buyers are procuring goods and services from around 23 lakh sellers and service providers across India, covering 11,523 product categories and 327 service categories, all without intermediaries.
Shri P. K. Singh, CEO of GeM, led the celebration, accompanied by senior officers, employees, and staff. In his address, Shri Singh highlighted the launch of the GeM SAHAYAK program, which aims to establish a nationwide pool of 6,000 to 7,000 trained, certified trainers to assist sellers and buyers on the GeM platform.
GeM has been at the forefront of promoting social inclusion by supporting women, tribal and SC/ST MSMEs, startups, artisans, weavers, ODOP/GI craftsmen, self-help groups, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and cooperative societies. Through initiatives like #vocalforlocal GeM Outlet Stores and market interventions, the portal has facilitated “access to markets,” “access to finance,” and “access to value addition.” Currently, 9,56,465 Udyam-verified MSEs are registered on the platform, having fulfilled orders worth ₹3,87,407 crore, which accounts for approximately 39.24% of the cumulative GMV. Additionally, 1,63,996 Women MSEs have completed orders worth ₹37,430 crore, and around 50,000 SC/ST MSEs have fulfilled orders worth ₹7,828 crore. Over 25,816 startups have secured orders exceeding ₹27,598 crore through GeM.
GeM has also embraced Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the procurement process. AI-driven tools on the platform improve product comparison and price discovery, enabling government buyers to access market intelligence, product similarity analysis, price gap analysis, anomaly detection, and more. These features allow for real-time identification of abnormal activities and help prevent potential collusion among buyers and sellers. GeM stands as the first public procurement agency to utilize a generative AI-based chatbot to elevate the user experience.
Launched on August 9, 2016, GeM was envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to leverage digital public infrastructure, creating a cashless, contactless, and paperless unified national procurement portal.
The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is a Section 8 company under the administrative control of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It facilitates the procurement of goods and services by Central Ministries, State Departments, Public Sector Enterprises (PSUs), Autonomous Bodies, Panchayats, and Cooperative Societies.
