Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in the Maldives on Friday, August 9, for a three-day official visit aimed at revitalizing the bilateral relationship between India and the Maldives. This visit comes after a strain in relations following the November 2023 election of Mohamed Muizzu, who is known for his pro-China stance.
On Saturday, August 10, Jaishankar emphasized the deep-rooted desire of India and the Maldives to work together for mutual welfare and interests. During his visit, he and his Maldivian counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer, inaugurated several High Impact Community Development Projects, including initiatives in street lighting, mental health, children’s speech therapy, and special education. They also signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in Male, further cementing their cooperative efforts.
Jaishankar shared his thoughts on the partnership between the two nations on social media, highlighting discussions on development, security, trade, and digital cooperation. He also witnessed the signing of an MoU between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Maldives to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives.
Addressing the media, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy, describing the Maldives as a cornerstone of this approach. He underscored the shared history and strong bonds between the two countries, stating that the relationship has enabled both nations to respond swiftly and effectively to challenges.
Jaishankar is also expected to meet with President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit, a significant engagement given the recent shifts in Maldivian leadership and its implications for regional dynamics.
