Kolkata: In response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, women across Kolkata and Bengal are organizing a large-scale protest late tomorrow night. The demonstration, set to begin at 11:55 pm, is being promoted as a fight for “women’s independence on the midnight of independence.”
Social media is abuzz with posters detailing protest locations, with more venues being added as support grows from across the state. In a show of unity, many men have also pledged to join the protest. Notable personalities such as actor Swastika Mukherjee, actor Churni Ganguly, and filmmaker Pratim D Gupta have urged people to participate in the midnight rally at their nearest locations.
The horrific incident, which occurred while the doctor was on night duty, has left Kolkata shaken. She was discovered on Friday morning in a seminar hall at the hospital, with severe injuries to her eyes, face, mouth, neck, limbs, and private parts.
