The Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, conducted a review of the performance of Power Distribution Companies and Power Departments across the country. During this review, particular attention was given to the quality and reliability of power supply in the National Capital Region, including Gurugram and Faridabad.
The discussion highlighted the rapid increase in power demand in these areas, with annual growth rates between 8-10%. To address this growing demand and ensure a consistent, high-quality power supply, the Ministry of Power, under the leadership of the Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, approved projects worth ₹3,600 crore for the modernization and upgradation of Power Distribution Infrastructure in Gurugram and Faridabad. These projects were greenlit during an Inter-ministerial Monitoring Committee meeting and will be executed under the Government of India’s flagship Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
The projects will benefit key areas, including Manesar and Badshahpur in Gurugram District, and Old Faridabad, NIT, Ballabhgarh, and Greater Faridabad in Faridabad District. The planned upgrades include the installation of around 500 feeders using advanced technology, the establishment of 20 new Gas Insulated Substations (12 in Faridabad and 8 in Gurugram), and the laying of 3,500 km of underground cabling. Additionally, approximately 5,000 new Distribution Transformers and Compact Substations will be commissioned, and 486 feeders will be bifurcated into 821 feeders.
The projects also emphasize network automation, which will enhance the ability to quickly detect and restore power outages. These developments are expected to greatly improve the quality and reliability of the power supply in these cities. The modernization efforts, particularly the underground cabling, will not only prepare Gurugram and Faridabad for future demands but also enhance citizen safety and the overall aesthetics, especially in densely populated areas.
