Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Paris Olympics Final Over Weight Limit Violation: CAS Verdict Delayed Again
Vinesh Phogat, a top Indian wrestler, faced disqualification on the morning of the Paris 2024 Olympics final after exceeding the 50kg weight limit by just 100 grams during the official weigh-in. Despite reaching the gold medal match after a 5-0 victory against Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, Phogat was barred from competing against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States due to the violation.
In response, Phogat filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on August 7, seeking to be awarded the silver medal. Originally, the CAS was set to announce its verdict on August 13, but the decision has now been postponed to August 16, according to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Phogat, who chose to stay in Paris until a final decision is reached, has her Olympic future hanging in the balance as the wrestling community awaits the outcome. The CAS has established a special division in Paris, led by President Michael Lenard of the United States, to handle cases related to the Olympic Games. This division operates within the Paris judicial court in the 17th arrondissement.
Following her disqualification, Phogat retired from wrestling, marking a significant moment in her career as the world watched for the final verdict.
